About Alice McDermott

Alice McDermott is the author of several novels, including Child of My Heart, Charming Billy (National Book Award winner), and Pulitzer Prize finalists That Night, At Weddings and Wakes, and After This. McDermott is the Richard A. Macksey Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University. Her new book is The Ninth Hour, a powerfully affecting story, spanning the twentieth century, of a widow and her daughter and the nuns who serve their Irish-American community in Brooklyn; available on September 19.

About Stephanie Powell Watts

Stephanie Powell Watts won the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence for her debut story collection, We Are Taking Only What We Need (2012), also named one of 2013's Best Summer Reads by O: The Oprah Magazine. Her short fiction has been included in two volumes of the Best New Stories from the South anthology and honored with a Pushcart Prize. She will be discussing her debut novel, No One Is Coming to Save Us, which she describes as "Imagine The Great Gatsby set in rural North Carolina, nine decades later, with desperate black people." No One Is Coming to Save Us is Sarah Jessica Parker's inaugural pick for American Library Association's Book Club Central.
