Artifacts: Photography by Susan Ruddick Bloom

McDaniel College's Department of Art and Art History presents “Artifacts: Photography by Susan Ruddick Bloom,” November 19 through December 13 in The Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall.  The opening reception will be held Thursday, November 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with an artist talk beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Susan Ruddick Bloom has spent her career recording her personal search for ephemeral moments.  Often, her search for those moments finds her traveling to areas as different as primal swamps filled with alligators, to remote villages in central Turkey, glaciers in Iceland, or exploring Dutch gardens.  The capture and interpretation of those fleeting moments is the subject matter for this show.  Bloom's love of drawing and painting play a part in her photographic interpretations.  The artwork is a testimony to her relentless look at her world and the fleeting moments that are translated into her personal artifacts.

Her journey has encompassed many mediums over the years, but has concentrated in digital fine art photography for the last twenty years.  Her skills in the digital arena have led to the publication of three books on that subject, exhibitions throughout the US, magazine articles, webinars, and a steady stream of workshops taught throughout the country.

Susan Ruddick Bloom holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is a Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at McDaniel College.

The Rice Gallery is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm.  The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.  For more information about the artist, please visit  For information and to confirm gallery hours, please call 410-857-2595.
