Coppin State University and McDaniel College Theatre will present “Best of Enemies,” a drama written by Mark St. Germain.  The show, a co-production with Coppin State University, is directed by Coppin State Theatre Arts faculty member Willie Jordan.

Based on the bestselling book by Osha Gray Davidson, “Best of Enemies” is a true story about the relationship between C.P. Ellis, a Grand Cyclops of the KKK, and Ann Atwater, an African-American civil rights activist, during the desegregation of the Durham, North Carolina, schools in 1971.  “Best of Enemies” exposes the poison of prejudice in the hearts of Atwater and Ellis who, by facing each other, are forced to face the worst, and best, in themselves.  The play contains strong language, including racially offensive language, and mature themes.

The cast includes McDaniel College students Matthew Foley and Anna Rozier and Coppin State University students Dorrian Wilson and Jermaine Jackson.

Dr. Garey A. Hyatt, Chair of Coppin’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts, says he and McDaniel Theatre Arts Department Chair Elizabeth van den Berg “were drawn to ‘Best of Enemies’ because it's a true, but unbelievable, story bearing a vital message for our time: that all people, no matter their differences, are capable of transformative change.  So, an essential component of this collaboration between Coppin State University and McDaniel College is the fact that we will hold talk-back discussions after every performance.  At a time when our national conversation is so divisive and embittered, we will engage our audiences in a series of robust conversations about the power of true empathy in our respective communities of Baltimore and Westminster.”

Performances at Coppin State University are September 18 through September 21 at 7:30 p.m. and September 22 at 3:00 p.m.  Ticket prices are as follows: General Admission: $25; Seniors/Non-Coppin Students: $20; Coppin Students w/ID: $10.  The Box Office number is 410-951-3369.
