College Choir Concert - “A Choral Banquet”

McDaniel College’s Department of Music will present the McDaniel College Choir in concert Sunday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m.  The concert, entitled “A Choral Banquet,” will take place in (Big) Baker Memorial Chapel.

The choir is under the direction of Margaret Boudreaux, with David Kreider serving as accompanist. In addition to music from all over the world, the concert will feature several familiar carols during which audience participation is encouraged.

“Since this program takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, we are presenting a focus on the joys of ‘gathering together’ for a joyful feast,” notes Boudreaux.  “Themes include food, of course, and also the longings for family and community that are the reasons we set time aside for such feasts throughout the year.  On one end of the spectrum we have a splendid baroque setting by Pachelbel of the Thanksgiving hymn “Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God),” complete with brass ensemble.  On the other end we'll present the more ‘down to earth’ look at feasting by P.D.Q. Bach in the choral movements from “The Seasonings” with slide whistles and kazoos.  In between we have both serious and satirical settings by Palestrina, Mendelssohn, and contemporary composers such as Ysaye Barnwell, John Rutter, Eric Whitacre, and others.”

One of the highlights of the program will be the world premiere of  “Hymn to the Belly (Alte Clamat Epicurus),” which was composed by 2009 McDaniel graduate Justine Koontz.  Koontz, who majored in music, “was a member of the choir and composed several pieces for us when she was here and after she graduated,” says Boudreaux.  “She is now starting a graduate program in choral conducting at Butler University in Indianapolis. She composed this work (with a text taken from the Medieval manuscript “Carmina Burana”) for our ‘feast’ themed concert.  This text was not used in Carl Orff's famous setting of texts from that manuscript, but the mood of the work is very similar.”

Members of the choir include Clarissa Balint, Daniel Beane, Olivia Belitsos, Matthew Butt, Jimmy Calderon, Erica Cichetti, Delaney Cole, Anna Donohoe, Shannon Doyle, James Dutterer, Matthew Gee, Erna Hammond, Joshua Harding, Jessica Hare, Kent Hu, Devin Isaac-Jackson, Caitlin Kazimir, Ben Kohn, Kara Kurzawa, Jennifer Litzinger, Antoinette Martin, Sakena Martin, Foster McDaniel, Meagan McLaughlin, Zoie McNeill, Sarah Michaels, Jacob Moore, Erin Morris, Adrienne Nichols, Masha Paul, Katie Robinson, Anna Ross, Kayla Rowley, Mehar Segal, Alex Seiler, Rachel Sentz, Jen Shillingburg, Morgan Stanback, Brianna Towler, David Whalen, and Samantha Yates.

Immediately following the concert, the audience is cordially invited to the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by the McDaniel College Student Alumni Council and Alumni Association, in front of Baker Chapel.  A reception featuring piano music and refreshments will follow in McDaniel Lounge.

The concert is free and open to the public.  For more information, call 410-857-2599.
