Deaf Lives: From Mumbai to Maryland

Screening of Documentary - 'Beyond Silence' and Panel discussion.

Beyond Silence is a documentary made with an intention of understanding the lives of Deaf people in their own words, language and culture. It is an attempt to acknowledge the existence of a Deaf community that has the ability to communicate "beyond silence". The film is a celebration of Deafhood. The film nowhere depicts the lives of Deaf people as people with disabilities, on the contrary it questions and argues about concepts and ideas about 'being handicapped'.
The exhibition of this documentary will hopefully assist the Deaf community in India to strengthen their fight for their basic rights - the recognition and adoption of Indian Sign Language in schools and in the community at large, awareness about Deaf culture and advocacy for television, cinema and internet captioning.
The Panelists :
Smita Kothari, a passionate leader within the Deaf community in Mumbai and is currently actively involved in the Metro South Asian Deaf Association in Washington, DC
Bilal Chinoy, an advocate for the rights of Deaf people in India, is currently a Multimedia Graphic Designer in the Enrollment Marketing Department at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC.
Dr. Cecily Whitworth, a Visiting Assistant Professor in McDaniel's ASL/Deaf Studies program, has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Gallaudet University.
