McDaniel College's Department of Art and Art History presents “Flatlands,” an exhibit featuring work by Hannah Leighton, January 25 through February 23 in The Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall. The opening reception will be held Thursday, January 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a Gallery Talk beginning at 6:00 p.m.
"I begin each painting with a few swift movements of my foam roller - nothing is worse than a blank canvas,” Leighton says. “I build up translucent layers, providing a foundation. Carefully placed opaque shapes and lines react to the washy undercurrent beneath. The painting gains more opaque shapes and in time its personality reveals itself. My job is to pull out the painting, not dictate what it must say. Inspiration comes from the shapes of stories, sounds, and memories.”
“A viewfinder focuses the eye and defines a composition. This structure may enhance the experience of viewing art by providing a lens. Throughout history artists have employed this tool as a method of finding balance.”
“These paintings can be viewed with or without the viewfinders,” the artist notes. “The podiums are extensions of the paintings. This work reveals the joy of shape making, color and pattern- my unapologetic vice. I pair it with a serious studio practice and sense of purpose. I want my work to engage all viewers, from curious neophyte to seasoned art critic.”
Leighton is an artist living and working in Baltimore, MD. She received her BFA in May, 2015 from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Upon graduating college, Leighton spent a month at Green Olive Arts in Morocco where she studied painting.
