McDaniel College Theatre presents the hit musical “Hairspray,” October 3 through October 6 at 7:30 p.m. on the Mainstage in WMC Alumni Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors, students, and the McDaniel College Community.
With music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, “Hairspray” delighted audiences by sweeping them away to 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out - and change is in the air! Loveable plus-size heroine Tracy Turnblad has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?
Adapted from the 1988 film by Baltimore’s own John Waters, the musical was an instant smash on Broadway when it opened on August 15, 2002, and won eight Tony Awards. It ran for over 2,500 performances and has also had national tours, a London West End production, and numerous foreign productions and was adapted as a 2007 musical film. The London production was nominated for a record-setting eleven Laurence Olivier Awards, winning for Best New Musical and in three other categories.
The production will be directed by theatre department chair Elizabeth van den Berg. Margaret Boudreaux, chair of the music department, will serve as musical director.
The cast includes Mae Alexander, Kevin Anderson, Samantha Arana, Lyndsay Arnold, Najee Banks, Daniel Beane, Alissa Beckett, Erin Brown, Danielle Bruck, Simone Davis, Hillary Deweese, Ashanti Edwards, Kelsey Gondek, Paul Davis Griffin, Erna Hammond, Josh Harding, Shelley Hierstetter, Chesney Jamieson, Lena Jenny, Malcolm Jones, Jennifer Litzinger, Elizabeth Maxman, Joanne McCoy, Foster McDaniel, Joshua Meltzer, Jasmine Nunez, Ryan Powell, Emma Richard, Adrian Rowe, David Ruth, Sammi Stair, Daniel Valentin-Morales, John Wontrop, and Karly Ziegler.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors, students, and the McDaniel College community. For more information, call the box office at 410-857-2448.
Closing night was spectacular. I definitely cried during Motormouth Mabel's song in Act II, and just like every night, I sang along with all my might during the curtain call. I can't believe this was all put together in just one month. 2 sold out shows, 1 amazing final performance.
Great high energy performance. A couple of costume mishaps... but still a very fun show :D Wonderful job, cast and crew!
