The Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs hosts this screening of the documentary “Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” about hip-hop culture with filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college football quarterback turned activist. A lifelong hip-hop fan, Hurt looks at issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in hip-hop culture. A discussion with Hurt follows the screening.
According to Hurt, “The more I grew and the more I learned about sexism and violence and homophobia, the more those lyrics became unacceptable to me. And I began to become more conflicted about the music that I loved.”
