Le Chat du Rabbin/ The Rabbi's Cat

This 2012 Cannes Festival César Award winner for Best Animated Film is set in the Jewish community of Algiers during the 1920s. Based on a series of graphic novels by Joann Sfar, who codirected with Antoine Delesvaux, the title feline is preparing for his bar mitzvah. He occasionally converses with the human characters, including the contemplative rabbi, his fiery teenage daughter, a Russian painter who fled his homeland following the Revolution, and various neighborhood eccentrics.
