Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County’s Fall Concert

Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County will present its fall concert, “A Choral Harvest,” on Sunday, November 17 at 3:00 p.m.  The concert will take place in (Big) Baker Memorial Chapel at McDaniel College and will feature music by Aaron Copland, J.S. Bach, and Johann Pachelbel.

This will be Masterworks Chorale’s first concert under music director Michael Holmes, who has performed extensively as a conductor or featured performer with numerous established European and American symphony orchestras, opera companies, and early music ensembles.

From 2000 to 2010, Holmes served as the music director of the Orchestra of the 17th Century and has been a co-founder and artistic director of the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble since 2000. WCSE remains one of the more in-demand ensembles for historic brass performance in North America, and is an active touring ensemble.

Michael Holmes has degrees in Music Theory/ Composition (BM) from James Madison University, and in Orchestral Conducting (MM) from Virginia Commonwealth Universtity.  He also did an independent study in music in 1990 at the British Institute in Florence, Italy and completed PhD coursework in Musicology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Michael Holmes has been on the faculties of University of Maryland, Towson University, and American University, and has been the music director of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring since 2004.

The Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County, known formerly as the Carroll County Choral Arts Society, was founded in 1977 under the direction of conductor David Kreider.  Since its founding, the group has brought the community the works of Mozart, Brahms, Haydn, Handel, and Mendelssohn, as well as contemporary composers, and has performed in major venues throughout the Baltimore and Washington area, often in collaboration with other artistic groups such as the Columbia Symphony, the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra, and the Children's Chorus of Carroll County.  Together with members of the McDaniel College Choir, Masterworks Chorale was selected in July 2005 to participate as the Carroll Festival Chorus in Festival 500, “Sharing the Voices,” held in St. Johns, Newfoundland.  More recently, Masterworks Chorale participated in the 2012 World Choir Games in Cincinnati.
