“Multiple Temporalities, Layered Histories: A Post-Sabbatical Solo Show by Steven Pearson”

McDaniel College's Department of Art and Art History presents “Multiple Temporalities, Layered Histories: A Post-Sabbatical Solo Show by Steven Pearson,” November 8 through December 7 in The Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall.

Of the exhibit, Pearson says, “In this new body of work, conceptualized while on a sabbatical that started in January 2018, I explore the liminal space between painting and sculpture, and communicate my interest in the sculptural dimension of painting.  Inspired by the work of artists such as Harry Holtzman, Sam Gilliam, Ann Truitt, and Phyllida Barlow, my series of paintings, drawings, and ‘paintings in the round’ are the result of extensive use of layering and overlapping.  I combine fragments of my representational paintings created between 1995-2003, nonrepresentational renderings produced between 2003-2014, and current articles from various newspapers.  Moreover, I juxtapose hard edge and painterly approaches, flat and illusory space to convey a multidimensional sculptural quality in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.  The final renditions of fragmented and layered histories enact the ways in which I experience my contemporary moment constructed, in part, from multiple temporalities excavated from my past.”

Steven Pearson is a painter, professor of studio art, and chair of the art and art history department at McDaniel College, where he has been teaching studio art courses since 2004.  He received his bachelor of science in studio art from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, and his master of fine arts in painting from the Leroy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.

The Rice Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The exhibit is free and open to the public.  For more information on Pearson, visit  For information and to confirm gallery hours, please call 410-857-2595.
