McDaniel College’s Department of Art and Art History presents “The Kathryn E. Wentz Juried Undergraduate Exhibition,” March 21 through April 7 in the Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall. The artists’ reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 21, with a Gallery Talk beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The exhibition is open to all students, who may submit up to five artworks they have done while studying at McDaniel College. Professional artists and art educators serve as the exhibition’s jurors each year. Winners will be announced during the opening reception.
Judging this year’s show are Hannah Leighton and Madeline Becker, co-directors and founders of Ballroom Gallery in Baltimore. Ballroom Gallery is an alternative art space with the goal of uplifting and celebrating a diverse range of creatives. More information on the gallery may be found at http://ballroomgallery202.com.
Hannah Leighton received her BFA last May from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2015. Upon graduation, Leighton spent a month at Green Olive Arts in Morocco where she studied painting. Post travels, she moved into an artist community where she has co-founded and directs Ballroom Gallery.
Originally from Cincinnati, Madeline Becker moved to Baltimore to study film and painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Madeline’s video work uses images to tell narrative, while her paintings seek to destroy image and content. This seeming contradiction between her impulse to add to the plethora of images in the world is a source of frustration.
The Rice Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. For information and to confirm gallery hours, please call 410-857-2595.
