The McDaniel College Department of Music will present a performance by its Student African Drum Ensemble on Thursday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m. The performance will take place in Decker College Center Forum.
McDaniel students in the Drum Ensemble include Camelia Beard, Garvin Brooms, Anthony Crawley, Jr., Harrison Curnutte, Annemarie Duerr, Jacqueline Fahrenholz, Rachael Fox, Colin Franke, Marissa Funke, Kirsten Gibson, Cooper Hostetler, Alyssa Johnston, Dimitri Lezcano, Clara Lowe, Devon A. Maranto, Hannah Maxwell, Emily McQuarrie, Myyah Mitchell, Firdaus Moussa, Ashly Nsangou, Jose Osorio, Matthew Purnell, Matthew Quinn, Alexandra Robb, Alicia Wagner, Abigail Watcher, Kevin Webster, Jr., and Andrew Zimmel. The students will be performing the songs, “Lambaa,” “Kuku,” “Macaru,” and “Mengani.”
Also performing will be Pape Demba Samb and Super Ngewel. Members include Baba Kenyattaa Henry, Salimata Linguer, Waju Christie, Baba Kamau Parks, Dr. Karen Rege, and Jamila Bell Knight.
The group is under the direction of McDaniel music department faculty Pape Demba "Paco" Samb, a “Senegalese Griot,” or West African historian, storyteller, singer, poet, dancer, and/or musician. Samb grew up in Senegal, learning to play the drums, and came to the U.S. in 2013. Samb originally came to the U.S. to perform with his band and once he arrived here he decided to stay.
