The Westminster Symphony Orchestra will present its annual spring concert Saturday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Carroll Community College’s Scott Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. The orchestra, composed of McDaniel College students as well as Carroll Community College students and community musicians, is under the direction of Dr. Linda Kirkpatrick. One of the highlights of the concert will feature McDaniel faculty members Mindy Niles, English horn, and Nicholas Reider, trumpet, on Aaron Copland's "Quiet City."
McDaniel students in the orchestra include Kirsten Bickford, Alexander Edwards, Brittany Ensor, Esther Jones, Jaclyn Kollegger, Sarah Lange, Gregory Laslo, Laura Maurer, Sean McGuire, Marlee Nelson, Lisabeth O'Neil, Melanie Ojwang, Luis Ortiz, Emma Piper, Allison Schmitz, and Ricky Tisinger.
In addition to “Quiet City,” the concert will include Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony,” Hans Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,” Leroy Anderson’s “Plink, Plank, Plunk,” conducted by student Luis Ortiz, and two pieces by John Mock: “The Eastern Shore” and “The Patron Saint of Ballyvourney” for string orchestra.
“We wanted to feature our music faculty again this semester,” said Kirkpatrick, “so we chose Copland's ‘Quiet City.’ We also wanted to challenge the orchestra, so we chose Schubert's ‘Unfinished Symphony.’”
Tickets are $5. Students and faculty of McDaniel and CCC are admitted free. For more information, call 410-386-8000.
